K-12 Nuclear School Visitation Program
The purpose of the K-12 Nuclear School Visitation Program (NSVP) program is to educate the next generation of STEM professionals about the exciting field of Nuclear Sciences and Engineering by offering elementary school, middle school, and high school level interactive workshops that cover topics related to Nuclear Sciences.
Interactive Workshops
Each workshop consists of an educational presentation, a scientific demonstration, an interactive experiment, and a comprehension activity led by student volunteers from the University of Puerto Rico.
These bilingual in-person workshops last aproximately 120 minutes, and are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:00am and 11:00am at schools located near Mayagüez.
All K-12 resources and events are completely FREE for schools, teachers, and K-12 student groups.
- Educational presentations contain age-adjusted content and may be requested in English or Spanish. They may contain supplementary audiovisual resources such as videos and songs.
- Scientific demonstrations are performed by volunteers with the use of model engines, plasma balls, microwaves, projectors, and other interactive learning tools to illustrate a concept.
- Hands-on experiments are performed by the students, either individually or in groups, to put in practice concepts learned during the presentation.
- Comprehension activities can include worksheets, trivia, coloring pages, and games.
Teachers are encouraged to participate in each activity.
This project is partially funded by the Nuclear Engineering Education for the Disadvantaged (NEED) Grant. As of April 2022, 238 K-12 students, in 6 different groups, across two different schools have been impacted.
Additional Resources
At-Home Activities for Parents
We want to provide equal opportunities for students outside of our reach. This is why we offer K-12 presentations, activity sheets, and experiment guides for parents to explore nuclear sciences at home.
Educational Fieldtrips
We are taking Nuclear on the road! Requests field trips to the UPRM campus or to the BONUS Reactor facilities in Rincón.
Classroom Resources for Teachers
Our volunteers may not be able to visit every school, but these important lessons can still make it to the classroom. We offer bi-lingual lesson plans on different K-12 topics for teachers across the country.
Girl-Scout and Boy-Scout Events
Did you know that the American Nuclear Society can offer Nuclear Science badge workshops for boy-scouts and girl-scouts?
