Tonight, Dr. Kijun Park from the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) will be speaking in room E3229 at 7 PM. Food will be provided, and the new T-shirts will be distributed!!!

Day at the capitol

VCU ANS held our annual Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, January 15. VCU ANS members met with Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax and Secretary of Education Atif Qarni as well Delegates and Senators to discuss the importance of nuclear science and technology to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Thanks to the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium (VNEC) for arranging this event for us.

Bowling Night

Next Friday 9/11 we are  hosting a bowling social at AMF Sunset Lanes, however, there is limited space!

Invited Speaker Kristan Wessels

Kristan Wessels  will be joining us to talk about t the Y-12 National Security Complex (at least the stuff she’s allow. She also wants to share with us a job posting for nuclear engineering students  that are graduating in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019. If you are interested please go here and look for the attached job posting! This will be discussed in the meeting a little bit as well. Tasty food will be provided.

Studsvik Scandpower

Studsvik is a international nuclear science and technology company. Their specialties include advanced engineering and consultancy, fuel and materials testing, fuel and reactor management software as well as lifecycle management of nuclear and radioactive hazards, decommissioning of nuclear facilities and designing radioactive waste management processes.

Invited speaker Ambassador Graham

In a joined meeting with INMM Ambassador Thomas Graham  came to VCU to talk to us about his job as international negotiator.  He has was involved in the negotiation of every single international arms control and non-proliferation agreement from 1970 to 1997.

Understanding uranium chemistry

Join the ANS-VCU and INMM-VCU chapters Thursday (March 22) at 6:30 PM, room E3229 to hear Dr. Weisz, VCU chemistry alumni, talk about nuclear fallout and uranium chemistry. Chinese food will be provided. David Weisz is a VCU Alumni and postdoc at Lawrence Livermore National Lab. He will discuss about his reserach on emission spectra from uranium laser-ablation, which allows the observation of high temperature Uranium oxidation in real time.

Body Meeting with Speaker William Shim

No automatic alt text available.Dr. William Jaewoo Shim, a professor in the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at Dankook University will be speaking about critical heat flux in tubes. A method to predict CHF (Critical Heat Flux) in vertical round tubes with uniform and cosine heat flux distribution will be discussed

New Fire Movie
 
The New Fire”(http://newfiremovie.com/) premieres this week at the Grace Street Theater, sponsored by the VCU Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. The film will be screened within the RVA Environmental Film Festival (https://rvaeff.org/) on Thursday February 15, 2018 at 6:30 pm. Emmy-winning filmmaker and director of the film David Schumacher will attend the premiere and will participate in a Q&A with the audience at the conclusion of the screening.
Day on the Hill

Last week, our members spent the day at the Virginia State Capitol meeting with Governor Ralph Northam and members of the Virginia General Assembly. They discussed the importance of clean energy production and other benefits of nuclear science and technology.
